LAX Pioneers New Building Process for MSC South Concourse

Woods Bagot helms the design of the forthcoming Midfield Satellite Concourse South

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has broken ground for LAX’s new Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South). The project, which commences LAX’s multibillion-dollar Capital Improvement Program, utilizes a new, more environmentally friendly construction process.

MSC South will employ a technique called Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR), with specific requirements tailored to the extension of Tom Bradley International Terminal. Nine segments will be assembled approximately a mile and a half away from the site, ensuring controlled, cost-effective, and time-saving construction.

The OCR approach aligns with LAX’s focus on innovation that enables accelerated timelines and future adaptability. The process will enhance efficiency while maintaining construction standards.

Designed by Woods Bagot to honor the city of Los Angeles, MSC South’s concept draws from the simplicity, functionality, and timeless aesthetics of California Modernism. The structure will feature a solar shading system known as a brise soleil, which enhances energy conservation and passive cooling while contributing to the concourse’s goal of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver accreditation.

Set to be completed by 2025, the project will add approximately 150,000 square feet and eight gates to the sixth-busiest airport in the world.
